Encouraging Words For New Stepmothers
by Jean McBride

Review by Patricia Schiff Estess

When I first saw the book, I chuckled at the author’s name, McBride. "Here's hoping she doesn’t try to dispense some five-minute marriage advice and dwell on how to swallow the disappointments of stepmotherhood or sip its instant joys,” I thought. She doesn’t. Instead, McBride’s gentle and insightful essays come from her family therapy background and from her having been there. While her slow but focused approach to becoming a full-fledged stepmom allows for all members of the new stepfamily to settle in, her empathy is with stepmothers. A lovely little book to dipinto when you’re having a problem and want to “talk” with an understanding friend.
